We think the Sunshine Coast is a pretty awesome place. Not just to take a holiday or visit for a short stay, but also to live. It seems a big part of Australia agrees, with over 330,000 Aussies calling the Sunshine Coast home.
The Sunshine Coast has had an interesting history. Pre European times, local indigenous culture goes back many many thousands of years, with local tribes living in harmony with the land and environment.
After European arrival, settlement was gradual, starting of course with penal colonies, then timber harvesting based from coastal ports. A brief gold rush centered around Gympie meant a railway line was established there from Brisbane, which opened up areas more distant from the coast for farming and other activities.
Today, much of the Sunshine Coast economy revolves around lifestyle, tourism and activities such as surfing and theme parks.

Sunshine Coast - They Had A Gold Rush?
There
certainly was a gold rush near the Sunshine Coast. Over 150 years ago, in 1867,
gold was discovered in the sands of a river gully near Mary River. It was
alluvial gold, which is small flecks and specks - and sometimes small nuggets -
of gold, washed down from gold bearing rocks further upriver.
The
news of this discovery rapidly spread, bringing miners from far away to try
their luck at getting rich. It also meant that an efficient form of transport
was needed, as well as a settlement to support the miners and their supplies.
And so the town of Gympie grew rapidly, and a railway was built to the town.
Today,
panning for gold is still possible, as a family activity, still in the town of
Gympie. Panning for gold in Gympie takes place at Deep Creek Fossicking Area -
fossicking is what looking for gold and precious stones is called. You need to
buy a license, either online or at the Visitor Center at Lake Alford.
